Do any of you have experience/opinions on alternative cat litters, like swheat or yesterday's news? I'd like to use something more eco-friendly than clumping clay, but I don't want stink, or a litterbox boycott. Thanks!

i used swheat and at first it was good, but then i got a bag that was buggy & got a bug infestation (black larder beetles, iirc.) unless you're the type of person who cleans the box every single day, i'd stay away from it. it also didn't seem to absorb the smells as well as others. the litter was wetter in the wet spots in that it just didn't dry in it's clumps. i gave it a good 6 month try, too. the cat didn't like the texture of the grains either.

finally i switched back to a clumping litter and just bailed on the whole ecofriendly thing.

Ditto for us on the bug infestation with World's Best. I also tried the eco-hostile (but easy to clean up, nice-smelling, and non-tracking) Crystals. We had a very unfortunate incident with the crystals - one of the cats hated it and decided to use the loveseat as a litterbox. I went back to the clumping clay after that.

i tried the crystals, prior to the wheat. but the cat - being rather pica-ish and eating anything - decided he liked to eat the crystals, think he'd suck on them or something. so the second i saw that was when i ran out and tried the swheat scoop.

If you feed them only half as much food, they generate only half as much waste, and then you've just cut your litter usage in half.

When I had ferrets that viewed litterboxes as places for pooping rather than as giant digging boxes, I was very happy with Feline Pine, the compressed pine pellets. Even better, you can get 40-lb sacks of the stuff meant for use as wood stove fuel, it's the same exact thing and much cheaper. It turns into sawdust when it gets wet, so it's easy to scoop out the used areas.

Yesterday's News smelled more like soggy newspaper than the actual newspaper that we use now. Thumbs down from me.
