All of my patients today had fleas. Now I'm psychosomatically itchy.

For those of you with pets, please consider getting pet health insurance! I've been assisting on emergency surgery lately, and it is shocking how much a freak accident or weird illness can cost! You can get accident-only coverage for less than $10/month, which will pay out up to $8,000 per year. VPI is the largest and most popular company, but the ASPCA also offers coverage (administered by an insurance company, of course), and they have the advantage of not having allowances for set expenses, like VPI's $75 for anesthesia, that can easily be way more. All coverage is by reimbursement rather than direct payment, which is inconvenient, but at least you don't have to worry about whether a vet accepts your company's plan.

TV wanted

If any of you fine folks gets a new TV, and has an old one you want to get rid of, I need one! Something 20" or larger, so we can watch movies in our living room (when not staring at the fish tank). I will give you $ and/or baked goods in exchange!

Do any of you have experience/opinions on alternative cat litters, like swheat or yesterday's news? I'd like to use something more eco-friendly than clumping clay, but I don't want stink, or a litterbox boycott. Thanks!

I wish the commuter rail had a quiet car, like Amtrak. Usually there are a few people on cell phones, chatting about daily minutia or gossip. Occasional stifled arguments with an S.O. Sometimes a noisy sociopolitical discussion, usually with one domineering person who is not as smart as (s)he thinks (s)he is. This morning was the worst. For the first half of the ride, the woman across the aisle from me was practicing singing descending half-octave scales with some sort of mini tape recorder. She was really bad. She stopped when someone sat next to her, as if that was too close, but the rest of us 2 feet away had been fine. Almost as soon as she stopped, some guy behind me started going on and on about Amma. At first I thought he was on the phone, because he was the only one talking, but about 15 minutes into it, someone else got a word in edgewise. I had some foam earplugs in my bag, and put them in during the bad singing, but it didn't really help. I have my ipod sometimes, but I have to turn it up so loud to drown people out that it gives me a headache, and I need new headphones because the earbuds are uncomfortable. I tried apple's in-ear rubber earbuds, but those were even worse for me. I know I am a total misanthrope, but I wish everyone would just shut the hell up.

For $65 and a cheek swab, you can find out the breed composition (from 38 registered breeds) of your mixed breed dog. I'm sort of curious about Stella, but not $65 curious.

For those of you who read Jane, there was an article about Egyptian kohl. I want to get some, and it's only $7, but the shipping is $22! Anyone else want to go in on an order and split shipping? Here are links to the article and the company:

I live in Shrewsbury now. At night, there is a very loud chorus of frogs, bugs, and whatever else lives out here. So far, I have seen a deer, bunnies, chipmunks, geese, and ducks. There are also 3 yorkies, a pug, and a mastiff on my street. They all run around loose most of the day. The pug thinks she owns the whole neighborhood. She does have a knitted pink collar with pearl beads on it, which might contribute to the delusion. The neighbor's cat is apparently quite the hunter - there was a lot of yowling at about 2am, but the cat looks unscathed and happy this morning.

Stella and Fergal are settling in well. They both enjoy sitting at the screen door to the deck, basking in afternoon breeze and sunshine. I am stuck watching my boss's dog for a week while his family is on vacation, but Dexter is being pretty good. He has to pee on every tree we pass on walks, which takes a long time, since I live in the woods.

I am having issues with the car I bought - it won't pass inspection because someone seriously hacked up the exhaust system to put on a ridiculous after-market muffler. The guy who sold it to me won't give me my money back, so I need to file a complaint, but in the meantime, I need to go find another car. My sister and I are going to look at a dealership tomorrow for trade-ins.

Now I need to buy some storage-type furnishings so I can finish unpacking, and some curtains to replace the sage green flowered lace I am currently living with.

If you haven't already, you should check out http://www.threadless.com. I am always surprised how many people have not heard of it. Basically, anyone can submit a design for a t-shirt, people vote, and the popular ones get printed. Lots of nifty stuff!
